The Behrends family settled in Luckenbach in the 1870’s.  The family earned their living by hauling freight to other pioneer settlements from San Antonio to San Saba Texas.  After settling in Luckenbach, they expanded their enterprise to raising numerous types of livestock; horses, cattle, sheep, laying hens, and turkeys to name a few.  The Behrends have produced cotton, milo, corn, oats, and wheat in their fields.  The Behrends family has always believed in being diversified. 

The big diversification came in the 1950’s led by the late Arno and Esther Behrends.  At this point, it was clear to the Behrends that it was time to move the business in the direction of manufacturing their own feed.  With the help of their sons Christian, Monroe, and Carey, Behrends Feed & Fertilizer was created.

In 1980, Arno left the business in the very capable hands of Christian and Monroe.  Christian was able to look at new opportunities and make them work.  He didn’t view situations as problems, but as challenges.  He was the number one trouble shooter, feed nutritionist, and engineering & construction genius.  Monroe took over the feed mill operations.  He oversees the production of hundreds of different feed formulas.   He also manages the grain storage among many other responsibilities.

Graduates of Texas A&M, Scott and Clark Behrends, sons of the late Christian and Vivian Behrends, are now partnered with Monroe.  With their help, and the help of many knowledgeable employees, Behrends Feed & Fertilizer has become a leader in the feed and fertilizer industry.
